Why learn more about hunger in Larimer County?
Because an increasing population of the elderly with fixed incomes go hungry every day in our community...in fact, half of the individuals served at our food pantry are either children or the elderly.
Because despite low unemployment, the fastest growing segment of the hungry is the working poor. Low wage jobs, lack of health insurance and high housing costs contribute dramatically to the demand for food from our warehouse.
*The average monthly income of our Food Share clients is just over $800/month
*On average our clients seek food assistance 2 times each month
Because the USDA recently released new figures showing that 35 million Americans are food insecure. The state of Colorado experienced the 3rd largest increase of food insecurity in the Country between 2003 and 2005.
Because no one in our community needs to go hungry today!
In 2006:

19,266 people were served through the FBLC Food Share direct service pantry locations in Fort Collins and Loveland (only November and December accounted for Loveland).

37,877 Kids Cafe meals were served to kids in need at 5 area locations.

5 million pounds of food was distributed to Larimer County residents in need valued at $7.5 million.

The food bank provided more than 1,000,000 pounds of food to partner agencies, valued at $1.6 million.

Hunger in America 2006:
The America's Second Harvest Network produced Hunger in America 2006, a comprehensive profile of the incidence and nature of hunger and food insecurity in the U.S. This study provides extensive demographic profiles of emergency food clients at charitable feeding agencies and comprehensive information on the nature and efficacy of local agencies in meeting the food security needs of clients.
